Pommery Cuvee Louise Rose 2000
In 1856, Alexandre Louis Pommery joined Narcisse Greno and began producing Champagne at House Greno. After Alexandre's sudden death just two years later, his wife, Jeanne Louise Pommery became the proprietor of the estate. In 1868, Jeanne began reconstructing the House, henceforth known as House Pommery. She commissioned the construction of an Elizabethan-style chateau on a 123-acre estate situated in the heart of Reims, France. In addition, she purchased 120 limestone and chalk pits (known as crayres), which were carved underneath the city of Reims by Roman soldiers during their occupation of Gaul. The 11 miles of pits located 100 feet underground were converted to cellars, and are able to store bottles of Champagne at a constant temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The cellars are connected to the surface of the Earth by a single, 116-step staircase. In 1874, Pommery Cellar Master Victor Lambert created the first vintage brut in the history of Champagne. This brut was credited with establishing the fame and success of House Pommery, and was a testament to the House's innovative philosophy. Cuve Louise Ros is a tribute to Jeanne Pommery's daughter, Louise, who was born when Madame Pommery was 38 years old. Each bottle of Cuve Louise is made exclusively from the finest grand crus in the Pommery vineyard: Avize and Cramant for the chardonnay and A and Bouzy for the pinot noir. A rich blend needing a minimum of eight years to age and fully develop its flavor, Cuve Louise is defined by an extreme purity which gives the wine a straightforward, balanced structure. Pommery Cuve Louise Ros 2000 is a blend of 61% Chardonnay from vineyards in Avize and Cramant and 39% Pinot Noir from A and Bouzy. "At first, there didn't seem to be anything outstanding about the 2000 vintage and we expected the grapes to come in at the normal quality level," says Pommery Chef de Cave Thierry Casco. "Once the harvest started it became clear that the perseverance of our growers was really going to pay off, with the fruit showing a beautiful potential." The grapes used to create Cuve Louise Ros 2000 were hand-selected by a team of 200 trained pickers for optimum sugar levels, and only the first-run juice was vinified in order to ensure the purity of the wine. Pale salmon in color, Cuve Louise Ros 2000 has lively aromas of strawberries, oranges and minerals. It is medium-bodied, with complex yet gentle notes of smoke, fruit and lightly roasted nuts that lead to an elegant, long finish. Cuve Louise Ros 2000 earned a score of 93 points from Wine Enthusiast and 91 points from Robert Parker. Pick up a bottle for Valentine's Day today!
